Although Bald Head Island’s year-round residents number less than 300, the peak mid-summer population swells to around 5,000 homeowners and vacationers.

Islanders enjoy the amenities and events offered by the Bald Head Island Club and Shoals Club, while the Bald Head Island Yacht Club offers another social and recreational outlet. 

Many property owners support the island’s nonprofits, including the Bald Head Island Conservancy, Old Baldy Foundation, Bald Head Island Academy, Village Chapel, Bald Head Island Auxiliary, and the Smith Island Art League.

The Bald Head Association serves an important role as the island’s master homeowners association, while the Village of Bald Head Island oversees island governance through its elected mayor and council, as well as a village manager and professional staff. On-island public safety includes police, fire and EMS.
