Radical Renovations Transform Two Island Homes
Sometimes an island home just needs a few updates to make it feel current—new throw pillows here, a little wallpaper there. Other times, a complete overhaul is what’s called for. That’s when neighboring families in Bald Head Island’s Harbour Village reached out to Project Works for two vastly different, but equally radical home renovations.
Lisa Lautner, a full-time island resident of 105 Turks Head Court, redesigned her home to blend modern aesthetics with the peaceful vibes of its seaside setting. Project Works stripped the former rental property down to its good bones, and then reinvented it with a chic gourmet kitchen, spa-inspired baths, and beautiful built-ins throughout the upstairs and downstairs living areas.
The redesign emphasizes open, airy spaces, where the owner’s extensive (and sometimes cheeky) art collection adorns the white shiplap walls. At the heart of the reverse-floorplan home, the stunning kitchen’s dark greenish-gray cabinets and brushed gold hardware beautifully complement the soft gray veins of the sleek white marble countertops.
This home stands as more than just a residence; it represents a statement of personal style and a sophisticated testament to relaxed, but elegant island living.
Nearby at 48 Transom Row, traditional beach cottage charm perfectly meets the needs of owners Billy and Barbara Richardson and their extended family.
Located on a prime corner lot, the home stands out with its classic exterior and inviting outdoor living spaces, including a screened porch that offers an ideal spot to take in the surroundings. While Billy gave Barbara “free rein” to redesign the home as she pleased, as a nod to Billy’s love of angling, Barbara asked Project Works to add a custom fishing closet, to her husband’s delight.
Inside, Barbara worked with the talented interior design team from Southern Studio. Together they created a warm, inviting atmosphere, tailoring the space to both aesthetic appeal and practical functionality with the use of crisp performance fabrics, lovely but comfortable furnishings, and a spacious dining room table with seating for eight.
Both home renovations exemplify fresh approaches to island living, as individual as the homeowners themselves. Learn more about the properties and the families that own them in the 2024 issue of Haven magazine.
