Bald Head Island Celebrates North Carolina Culture, History and Cuisine -
A Celebration of North Carolina’s Oldest Lighthouse
June 8-9, 2019
Bald Head Island is set to host a weekend long celebration of North Carolina’s oldest lighthouse, Old Baldy, by showcasing the culture, history, cuisine, music and arts of the state during the third annual North Carolina Treasures Weekend, June 8-9, 2019. Spearheaded by the Old Baldy Foundation, which oversees the preservation of the 200-year-old lighthouse as well as educational outreach, the event weekend will include an epicurean event featuring celebrated pit master Matthew Register and a marketplace featuring arts and crafts from a wide range of artisans. A portion of event proceeds will be donated to the Old Baldy Foundation, and tickets can be purchased through their website.
The weekend begins with a ticketed event on Saturday, June 8th featuring North Carolina BBQ chef Matthew Register. Register, known for his restaurant Southern Smoke BBQ in Garland, will present a farm to table menu crafted with North Carolina products and featuring recipes from his inaugural cookbook "Southern Smoke: Barbecue, Traditions, and Treasured Recipes Reimagined for Today.” To complement this dinner held under the shadow of Old Baldy, three award-winning North Carolina-based distillers will be featured. Durham Distillery will offer samples of their Conniption Gin, recently awarded the number one Navy Strength Gin in the U.S. at the 2019 World Gin Awards; 1712 Bourbon, the first grown, distilled and aged Bourbon in North Carolina since prohibition, will be providing true "Grain to Glass" North Carolina spirits, and Eda Rhyne Distillery out of Asheville, NC, will feature their unique interpretations of traditional herbal liquors with their Appalachian Fernet and Amaro Flora. Tickets to the dinner are $90 a person. Signed copies of Register's cookbook will be available for purchase.
On Sunday, June 9, artisans from throughout North Carolina will set up shop in the “North Carolina Treasures Marketplace” featuring North Carolina made arts and décor, specialty food purveyors, craft beer and distiller tastings. This will be a celebration of the many talented farmers, artisans, purveyors, craftsmen and more who represent North Carolina's rich history and landscape with their works. This event is free with culinary and drink packages available.
