Day Trips to Consider When Staying at Bald Head Island

Whether you are staying at Bald Head Island for a weekend or a week, there are plenty of things to do.  A day trip within a couple of hours of BHI allows you to learn more about all of the great things happening in Eastern, North Carolina.

Enjoy shopping, dining and rides at this destination.  Watch the fireworks show that takes place every week during the summer. There is also a summer concert series that you can attend.  You can also hike throughout Carolina Beach State Park to check out a relaxing view of the Cape Fear River. The best aspect is the boardwalk is a short 5 minute drive from the ferry.

Duplin Winery in Duplin, NC

Tour an award winning winery that is one of the largest and oldest in the south.  They have free daily tours, a gift shop, gourmet foods and a delicious restaurant known as The Bistro on the property.  In addition, Duplin hosts several large festivals during the year and is home to the World’s Largest Frying Pan. 

Kinston, NC

This beautiful, southeastern, NC town is only 2 hours away by car.  It’s the perfect location for foodies and people who love craft-beer.  Mother Earth Brewery and Chef Vivian Howard’s famous Chef & The Farmer Restaurant are places you must see while there. 

Swansboro, NC




Walk around Hammocks Beach State Park or dine at the Riverside Steak and Seafood restaurant for lunch.  One of the most popular activities is taking a kayak to Bear Island which is a 3 mile long undeveloped barrier island where you can explore trails, camp or fish.

Whiteville, NC

This destination is just under an hour from Wilmington, NC.  You can visit the NC Museum of Natural Sciences which is perfect families with small children.  If you are looking for a different dining experience, you can visit Chef and the Frog, a “new age restaurant offering European cuisine with a twist of Asian and Southern flair.”
