Why Fishermen Love Bald Head Island?
Bald Head Island has long been a favorite location for fishermen to visit. From various locations to cast your fishing pole from to several types of fish waiting to be caught, fishermen of all levels will enjoy a trip to BHI.
You can plan an offshore fishing trip to find tuna, mackerel and grouper. If you prefer to fish in one of our many creeks around the island, you’re more likely to catch speckled or grey trout, flounder and blue fish. A trip to the beach with your fishing pole may yield mullet, flounder or pompano.
Beginner fishermen or first-time Bald Head Island visitors can schedule fishing tours with the Bald Head Island Conservancy or the Sail Shop. They will pick you up, offer instruction and provide everything you need for a fun day fishing in the waters surrounding BHI.
Many people say the fishing on the island is the best during the Bluefish Bonanza which is usually held at the end of October and is sponsored by the Bald Head Island Chamber of Commerce. The tournament starts with the Welcome Reception on Friday evening, followed by the competition on Saturday morning and a delicious seafood dinner and awards ceremony that night. It’s a great event and can be attended by the entire family.
