Your 2018 Bald Head Island Bucket List

Kayak Bald Head Island

Another year has begun. There is nothing magical about a new year but having a “clean slate” does make you think about things you are determined to make happen THIS year. Whether you made resolutions or not, a Bald Head Island vacation should be on everyone’s to-do list. Don’t let another year pass you by without experiencing the true magic of this amazing island. We’ve compiled a list of things to add to your itinerary when you do get here. It may take more than one trip but here are some things you will want to mark off your Bald Head Island bucket list.

Go sailing – Is there anything better than being out on the water with wind blowing in your hair? Beautiful Bald Head Island can make this even better! Have an instructor from the Sail Shop take you and your friends on a tour of the Cape Fear River. Get amazing views of the island only available from the water. If you’re interested in learning to sail, lessons are offered for every skill level from kids to experienced adults.

Play croquet – The championship croquet greensward at the Bald Head Island Club regularly hosts the U.S. Croquet Association tournaments. This popular backyard game has grown to be included in many outdoor barbecues and parties. Playing on Bald Head Island will be a fun experience for the whole crew. Croquet is available to all and lessons are offered. You can check with the Golf Shop for availability and to rent equipment. But remember, all-white attire is required to play so pack accordingly.

Join the golf cart parade – One of the most anticipated events on Bald Head Island is the July 4th celebration. This is the chance to go all out and decorate your golf cart for the Annual Golf Cart Parade. This exciting event is now a fundraiser for the Old Baldy Foundation. The holiday lineup also includes Ghost Walks, kayak trips, and pool games at the Shoals Club.

Ride a tandem bike – Since golf carts and bicycles are the only means of transportation on the island, many people will be riding bikes around. The scenery is ideal to make a relaxing and peaceful ride around the town. Coastal Urge offers rentals including tandem bikes which we think everyone is secretly dying to mark off their bucket list. So grab your partner, friend, or child and ride a bicycle built for two! Coastal Urge also offers child seats as add on features to bike rentals.

Kayak through the creeks – It seems that most of these are a great way to just relax on your Bald Head Island vacation. Time slows down on the island and everyone is able to just take their time and enjoy each moment. Kayaking is another great way to enjoy nature and put all worries aside. Take in the stunning views and listen to the calls of birds along the creeks. Guided tours are available through the Bald Head Island Conservancy for individuals and small groups.

Have a beach picnic – Bald Head Island boasts 14 miles of pristine beaches. Whether you are staying in a gulf-front premier property or not, a beach picnic is a must during your stay. Pack a cooler or basket with a nice lunch or snacks and bring a blanket to eat by the shore. The sound of waves crashing and warm sun on your skin makes any meal one for the books. You can also pick up a pre-made order from Maritime Market with all your favorite items.

Climb Old Baldy – Don’t think that this is just for the history buffs. Old Baldy offers the best view of the island! It’s the oldest standing lighthouse in North Carolina and gives panoramic views over the trees, marsh, and harbor. It’s 108 steps to the top and worth every breath!

These are some of the top things to do on Bald Head Island but there are many, many more to pack into your trip. The island truly offers a one-of-a-kind environment and will give you just the break from your daily routine that you need. This year, mark things off your bucket list! You can start in Bald Head Island.
