6 Things You Can’t Miss in Bald Head Island

There are two types of people on vacation: the kind that want to do everything and pack their schedules full and the kind that want to do absolutely nothing and just relax. No matter which category you fall into, there are some things on your Bald Head Island vacation you won’t want to miss.

Sunrise – Catching a Bald Head Island sunrise is the perfect way to start your day. Most sunrises are awesome but these just add to the unmatched beauty of the island. Take a walk on the beach or relax in your hammock and take in the crisp air, the watercolors of the sky, and only the sounds of the waves before your crew wakes up. We all love to sleep in on vacation but plan to catch at least one sunrise and you will not be disappointed.

Old Baldy Climb – Old Baldy is North Carolina’s oldest standing lighthouse and was first illuminated in 1817. Maybe the kids aren’t that interested in the island’s history but they’ll sure love seeing the view at the top! It’s 108 steps up and you’ll get the best panoramic view you can’t find anywhere else in Bald Head Island.

Explore the Maritime Forests – The Maritime Forests Preserve offers several trails from easy to moderate all through a beautiful canopy of trees. You can join an organized walk with the Bald Head Island Conservancy or go on your own. Get the kids involved by looking for different types of birds or fiddler crabs that like to pop up. Bluff Island can be accessed by kayak and also offers fun hiking with awesome views of Cape Creek.

A Treat from Sandpiper Coffee & Ice CreamSandpiper opens at 7:30am each morning and we know it’s never too early to treat yourself! Enjoy fresh baked pastries and breakfast from the chefs of Delphina and grab a delicious hot or iced flavored coffee. Or come by for a frozen treat like a tasty fruit smoothie, Breyers Ice Cream milkshake, or locally made in Wilmington Coastal Cupcakes Ice Cream.

Howl at the Moon – Each month, you can join in an island tradition attending the biggest Bald Head Island beach party for Howl at the Moon. Hosted by Maritime Market, the evening involves a bonfire, bagpipes, Market soup and appetizers, and of course, howling at the moon! This is a fun night that usually attracts hundreds.

Island Retreat Massage – What’s a vacation without some pampering? While you shake all your blues loose and stress melts away, make an appointment at Island Retreat Spa and Salon for the icing on the cake. There are several different relaxing options to choose from including a facials, pedicures, massages, and even acupuncture. You can leave the island feeling truly rejuvenated.

These are a few of our favorite things to do on Bald Head Island but there are many more! With incredible scenery and a relaxing atmosphere, it’s a delight to just be here but these things can add to an unforgettable Bald Head Island experience.
