You step onto a ferry boat for a two mile ride across the Cape Fear River. A cool wind blows through with temperatures in the high 50’s. You catch site of the state’s oldest standing lighthouse before you reach 10,000 acres of untouched beach, marsh and maritime forest preserves. Welcome to winter on Bald Head Island! 

Mild yet cooler temperatures bring unique opportunities to Bald Head Island in January. First Friday Fire Pit event is most popular in January when evenings are cooler. There’s nothing like bundling up next to a warm fire, roasting marshmallows and telling stories.  

The sportsman will be busy during the winter months at Bald Head Island. Tennis clinics fill the calendar in the month of January. The Croquet Club meets weekly for a friendly game. The golfers are lucky with great green conditions and the fishermen are blessed with some amazing winter fishing for Redfish, Speckled Trout, Black Drum and Striped Bass.

History buffs can step into the past with a tour of Old Baldy. The oldest standing lighthouse in North Carolina, Old Baldy was an active maritime navigational aid from 1818 to 1935. Visit the museum to learn about lighthouse keepers and pirates! Climb your way to an adventure, up 108 steps, 5 landings and a ship’s ladder for the best view on the island. Watch as newly installed ground lights will be illuminated for the first time on January 27th at the Inaugural Lighting of Old Baldy!
