Bald Head Island Goes Pink Weekend Wrap-UP
According to the Susan G. Komen website breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide and the second-most common cancer overall. In 2014, an estimated 232,030 cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in the U.S. alone. One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Armed with this information and a three year survivor herself, Barbara Adams-Miller with help from friends, begun what will surely be an annual tradition – BHI Goes Pink.
BHI Goes Pink was held Columbus Day Weekend, October 11-12, 2014. The weekend’s events began with a Showcase of Designer homes and over 400 people toured the eight designer homes on the showcase route. A fashion show at Island Passage included pink cocktails, hors d’oeurvres with a special sale item of breast cancer awareness sliced soaps. Bald Head Island Blues and the Maritime Market open their doors with pink inspired treats, pink wine, sales and offered what became the official t-shirt of the weekend. Room Service offered cupcake treats, specials and Bald Head Island Yoga offered yoga classes.
Sunday’s 5k Pink Turtle Trot Run boosted almost 100 runners, some from the mainland, and included a kick off by a Susan G. Komen Foundation representative and Dr. Suzanne Dorsey of the BHI Conservancy. The afternoon’s chapel service with the Reverend Jim Brown presiding was an inspiring testament to the many lives cancer as affected. Even youngsters such Alex Phillips, a thirteen year old budding photographer, joined the campaign by selling her work with proceeds going towards a Race for the Cure. The weekend’s activities ended with a Pink Sunset Celebration with music, games, raffle prizes and s’mores on the beach provided by The Riverside Adventure Company.
Barbara Adams-Miller says she has been overwhelmed with the amount of sponsorships and volunteers who jumped on board to make the weekend such a success. October is breast cancer awareness month and with so many island businesses, island residents, island guests and island employees becoming involved it is only natural to start planning for next year’s event which will be held Columbus Day Weekend, October 9-11, 2015.
Proceeds from the weekend’s events will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
